The typography module for year two students started on Wednesday 24 September with a day of lectures and short workshops punctuated by progress presentations and feedback. After an initial lecture outlining the fundamentals of type presented by Andy Neil, students went to the studio for a quick succession of hands-on workshops exploring idiosyncratic attributes of letter shapes and their relationships to each other within a typeface.
The group came together after each exercise to compare, evaluate and appreciate the individual responses to each task.
And in between, further short presentations moved the subject forward, each building on experiences gathered during the exercise before.
All in all, a fast-moving day that set the pace for year two students and helped them appreciate the level of work expected at this stage.
This day of introducing typography at a deeper level was also the first opportunity for the year group to all work together in the new studio with its generous open space layout and light airy feel. A great start on the module.
