Student campaign bought by major client

A group of our BA Creative Advertising students were asked by The Hub, London, to work on a live advertising brief for one of their clients, the Youth Hostelling Association.

They did, presented their ideas and now the YHA wants to run one of our creative team’s campaigns.

The winning students, Hattie Hancocks and Maria Makepeace, will be spending June in London at The Hub finessing their campaign for a launch over the summer.

An advertising campaign bought by a major client before you’ve even left university – what a way to start your career!

First Year Creative Advertising Students Create a Radio Campaign for Source FM

With so many advertising channels available, radio is often the ‘forgotten’ medium. But, done well, it can be extremely effective. Cheap to produce and relatively  inexpensive to buy air time, it can be brilliant fun. After all, with radio, you can go anywhere and be anything – as the action takes place in the listeners’ imagination.

Ex-advertising Creative Director and radio advertising expert, Barry Whitehead ran a radio writing workshop for first year Creative Advertising students which culminated in a live brief for Source FM, our community radio station.

Students were tasked with coming up with ideas to promote the radio station to local businesses, encouraging them to advertise on the station. Working closely with station manager, Matthew Rogers, the students created some great scripts – and the best of the best were recorded at Source FM using local actors and presenters. The ads will go live soon … tune in to Source FM to hear them!

Mark Denton Visit

Industry legend Mark Denton got the sleeper train down to Cornwall to give a talk to BA and MA Creative Advertising students last Friday.

We we were all blown away by his sheer embodiment of creativity. He just doesn’t stop creating stuff!

He even once turned his flat into a fake stately home, complete with busts of his fake ancestors.

Mark is one of the advertising industry’s legends.

Son of a scrap metal merchant Mark started out as a visualiser and paste-up artist, he got his lucky break at Leo Burnett where, by posing as Senior Art Director, he blagged his way into getting his ads made for free by up and coming photographers and directors.

Since then he’s been a partner of a famous ad agency and the owner of a design company. He’s launched a magazine, re-launched Britain’s oldest advertising organisation and put on the UK’s first ever World Championship Mexican Wrestling event. He’s currently directing commercials, designing and bossing people about at COY! Communications.

Denton has produced winning work for Nike, Wrangler, Heineken, Levis, Greenpeace and many, many, many more. He really has won an obscenely large amount of awards.

Especially if you count bronzes and certificates (and he does count them – regularly).

Current projects include an exhibition and documentary on youth culture, and a range of leisure wear. But is he still available to shoot commercials? I hear you ask… you bet!

When Mark does a talk, he always asks for a poster to promote it – and our students came up with some great ideas.

London Week BA(Hons) Creative Advertising

In the first week of November our 1st year students travelled to London to visit a number of advertising agencies for our ‘London Week’.

Amongst the 11 different agencies visited (including Google) we visited ex-Falmouth students working in 6 agencies: TBWAVCCP, Wunderman, Table 19, M&C Saatchi and Mother. This was of particular interest to the students as they could ask them many questions relating to our alumnis’ journey from Falmouth Uni to industry.  Our old boys and girls joined us for a drink in the evening and a good time was had by all.

Additionally, we were kindly hosted by Crispin Porter Bogusky, BBH and Iris. We’d like to thank the staff and Creative Directors for their continued support of our course and many of our students can now look forward to seeing them again in the summer when they take up generous offers of placement opportunities.
