The crowds arrived despite the heat and humidity. Lots of interest in the work on our stand too. Interviews arranged for portfolio crits and possible placements. There will be a networking drinks session for the students tonight with alumni of the course who are now fully employed – and then all the work is to come down in the morning.
One of our student teams has won a ‘Best in Show’ award. (Yes, it’s a bit like Crufts but without the yapping, coiffured dogs.) Gavin and Richard won the award for their campaign for the London Underground – advertising the fact that it’ll soon be open all night over the weekends. Our favourite ads were the one making the Tube Map look like a constellation in the night sky and the one showing the Underground’s logo as a full moon. The guys’ prize is a D&AD Annual each and a sticker to put in their portfolios to show off to ad agencies. Good for them, it was excellent work.
Here we are at Spitalfields Market – the New Blood exhibition space. If it looks like a maze, that’s how it seems on the ground too. The temperature outside is a sweaty 34 degrees – in the building it’s considerably more, due to the glazed roof. Ugh. This exhibition is the culmination of all that we do on the course – apart from a written piece that needs to be completed over the summer. Every student team gets an area of wall at the exhibition 84cm wide to show off their best ad campaign – with their final portfolio beneath it.
Here are some shots of our walls. In the evening there’ll be a Private View, which we hope will be as peppered with advertising industry luminaries as it usually is – despite the ridiculous heat – and some positive feedback, of course.
One week to go!

Here’s a snippet from the New Blood Awards’ section, showcasing one of our students, Nathan Smith’s Yellow Pencil winning design.
“Unwrapping Purdey’s – The brief was to repackage Purdey’s Rejuvenate and extend its range with packaging for one new drink – Purdey’s Natural Energy. The concept is to discover the secret of Purdey’s Rejuvenate by unwrapping its outer coat to reveal the ingredients. The design is based on modern apothecary; a balance between nature, medicine and science. The undercoat image promotes the flavours through lush scientific style illustrations, while the metallic exterior is a modern take on apothecary labelling.”
